Russia has officially welcomed the ceasefire between Iran and Israel, urging that the halt in hostilities be lasting and sustainable. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters on June 24 that "if a ceasefire has indeed been achieved, this can only be welcomed,” adding that Moscow hopes “this will be a sustainable ceasefire” .
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov echoed Peskov’s sentiment, stating Russia is “in favour of a ceasefire” but warning it is “very difficult to make any final conclusions now”, given reports of ongoing strikes after the truce announcement . Lavrov highlighted that while the United States and Qatar reportedly helped broker the deal, the situation remains "fragmentary", with reports of continued exchanges between the two nations.
Having signed a strategic partnership agreement with Iran earlier this year, Russia has criticized previous Israeli and U.S. military actions as illegal. Russian concerns now focus on preventing further escalation and reinforcing diplomatic channels. As the region stands at a precarious junction, Moscow's cautious approval underscores both hope and concern.
