Italian luxury powerhouse Prada showcased sandals resembling traditional Kolhapuri chappals during its Spring/Summer 2026 Men's collection in Milan, igniting a wave of criticism. The tan leather footwear, complete with a slim build, skeletal frame, and distinctive toe‑ring, drew immediate attention - especially since no mention of India or Kolhapur appeared in official show notes .
Indian netizens were quick to label the move as cultural appropriation. One X‑user remarked: "Prada SS26 includes Kolhapuri chappal…Western fashion industry is ripping off Indian fashion again."
Journalists and commentators echoed concerns. The Hindu Times called it “another Scandi‑scarf scandal 3.0,” citing the show’s giveaways - a leather toe‑ring—as blatant nods to Kolhapuri design without attribution. Meanwhile, Financial Express noted that while global fashion embraces Indian artisanal excellence, cultural credit remains elusive, even as Kolhapuris enjoy G.I. tag protection since 2019.
Proponents argue inspiration is part of fashion’s evolution. Critics, however, urge brands to practice cultural respect - giving credit, acknowledging sources, and supporting the artisans behind cherished traditions. This incident spotlights a growing debate: is it homage - or hijack?
