Dr. A. Velumani, the founder of Thyrocare, shared a remarkable journey of how poverty, discipline and a Rs 7 train pass laid the groundwork for his success — transforming long hours on a railway platform into a life-changing opportunity. At a time when college and hostel fees were out of reach, Velumani chose an affordable college near Coimbatore and stayed in a free government hostel, even though commuting was a big challenge.
With a quarterly train pass costing just ₹7, he travelled daily from the hostel to the college — often arriving early and leaving late. These extensive travel gaps became study sessions on the railway platform, where he focused intensely on subjects like mathematics, physics and chemistry. His relentless routine — described as roughly 6,000 hours of intense study over 1,000 days — helped him secure a job at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), a turning point that propelled his scientific career.
Velumani reflects that his biggest advantage was not privilege but poverty, prompting discipline, frugality and focus that many entrepreneurs lack. His early struggles shaped his approach to life, education and business, emphasizing the difference between jobs and careers and cautioning against early comfort that stunts growth. Today, as Thyrocare has grown into a ₹5,000 crore enterprise, Velumani’s story continues to inspire — showing how small decisions and daily dedication can build extraordinary outcomes.
