Delhi is currently grappling with a severe heatwave, as temperatures rise beyond 41°C and are expected to touch 42°C over the weekend, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). In response, health experts are urging citizens to adopt measures to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke, dehydration, and fatigue.
Dr. Shovana Vaishnavi, Senior Consultant at Max Super Speciality Hospital, highlights hydration as the most effective defense. Drinks like coconut water and buttermilk can restore lost electrolytes, boost gut health, and keep the body cool. Including hydrating fruits and vegetables—like cucumbers, watermelons, and celery—also aids internal cooling.
Avoiding physical activity during peak heat hours is crucial. Exercise, if needed, should be limited to early morning or late evening. Loose, breathable cotton clothing and accessories like hats or sunglasses help minimize heat exposure.
Dietary habits also matter. Eating light meals such as salads and fruits prevents digestive strain, while limiting sugary and alcoholic drinks reduces the risk of dehydration. Dr. Vaishnavi further advises maintaining a proper sleep routine and staying indoors during the hottest parts of the day.
These simple yet effective steps can help Delhi residents stay safe and healthy as the city faces intense summer heat.
