On this day, March 6, the world remembers Michelangelo Buonarroti, a name synonymous with artistic perfection. Known for masterpieces like David, The Pietà, and the Sistine Chapel Ceiling, Michelangelo was more than just a sculptor he was a visionary shrouded in mystery.
Did you know Michelangelo despised painting? Despite creating one of history’s greatest frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, he considered himself a sculptor first. Even more intriguing, he often worked in secrecy, refusing to let anyone witness his creative process. Some believe he left hidden messages in his works, including anatomical references cleverly concealed in The Creation of Adam.
His personal life was equally puzzling. Michelangelo rarely bathed, lived frugally despite his wealth, and left behind cryptic poetry hinting at deep inner turmoil. His unfinished sculptures, known as Prisoners, appear as if souls are trapped in stone—was this intentional or a reflection of his own struggles?
On his birth anniversary, we celebrate not just his art but the eternal mystery that was Michelangelo.
