The Chardham Yatra, one of India's holiest pilgrimages, includes visits to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Devotees traditionally begin this sacred journey from Yamunotri, and there are both religious and geographical reasons behind this practice. According to Hindu beliefs, Yamunotri is the origin of the Yamuna River, and bathing in its waters cleanses one of sins, paving the way for a smooth and obstacle-free pilgrimage.
Legend says Yamraj once blessed his sister Yamuna on Bhaidooj, promising salvation to those who bathe in her river.
Spiritually, starting the journey here ensures divine blessings and protection. Geographically, Yamunotri lies in the westernmost part of the Chardham route. The traditional practice of moving from west to east aligns with the concept of a clockwise (parikrama) journey, considered highly auspicious in Hindu rituals.
Hence, pilgrims begin their journey at Yamunotri to purify themselves and follow the spiritually aligned path of the Char Dham.
