The Government of India has declared a three-day state mourning following the passing of Pope Francis, who died on Monday at the age of 88. As the first non-European Pope in nearly 1,300 years, Pope Francis was a transformative figure in the Catholic Church and an influential global voice for compassion, interfaith dialogue, and social justice.
In a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs expressed deep sorrow and confirmed that the state mourning would be observed across the country. The national flag will fly at half-mast on April 22 and 23, with an additional day of mourning on the Pope's funeral day. All official entertainment events during this period have been cancelled as a mark of respect.
This solemn gesture highlights India's recognition of Pope Francis' global impact, especially his efforts toward peace, poverty eradication, and religious unity during his historic papacy.
