In his much-talked-about podcast with Lex Fridman, PM Modi opened up about the strained India-Pakistan relationship, emphasizing that all peace efforts have been thwarted by Pakistan, which he accused of "exporting" terror.
In the three-hour episode released on Sunday, Fridman asked PM Modi about his vision for future bilateral ties. Modi responded by recalling the 1947 partition, stating that despite getting their own way, Pakistan chose conflict over peaceful coexistence. He said, "After getting their own way, we expected them to live and let live, yet they decided to be at odds with India. They have waged a proxy war against us."
Blaming Pakistan for being the "epicenter of turmoil," he added, "Wherever terror strikes in the world, the trail somehow leads to Pakistan. Take the September 11 attacks, for example. The mastermind behind it, Osama Bin Laden—where did he eventually emerge from? He had taken refuge in Pakistan."
Reflecting on his peace efforts, he recalled inviting then-Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif to his 2014 swearing-in, calling it an unprecedented diplomatic gesture. However, he noted that every attempt at fostering peace was met with hostility and betrayal. He also mentioned his surprise 2015 visit to Lahore for Sharif's birthday, reaffirming India's pursuit of peace, though it yielded no results. Modi further highlighted Pakistan's internal strife, questioning an ideology that thrives on terror and bloodshed, harming even innocent civilians.
PM Modi's discussion with Fridman is part of the podcaster's globally popular show featuring influential figures. Fridman described the interview as "one of the most powerful conversations of his life."
