V Narayanan, a renowned scientist and propulsion expert, is set to assume the role of ISRO chairman and Secretary, Department of Space, on January 14, 2025. The appointment, approved by the Cabinet's Appointments Committee, positions Narayanan as a key figure in driving India's space ambitions for the next two years or until further notice.
Narayanan's career spans nearly 40 years, marked by pivotal contributions to rocket and spacecraft propulsion. Joining ISRO in 1984, he initially worked on solid propulsion systems for Sounding Rockets, the Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV), and the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC). He later specialized in the development of advanced ablative nozzle systems, composite motor cases, and igniter cases, critical components in launch vehicles.
Currently serving as Director of ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram, Narayanan has overseen advancements in cryogenic and semi-cryogenic engine technologies. These innovations have cemented India's place in the global space community.
Narayanan takes the helm during a transformative period for ISRO. Recent achievements include SpaDex, an indigenous space docking technology pivotal for future missions like Chandrayaan-4 and Gaganyaan. With this technology, India joins an elite group of nations—United States, Russia, and China—that have mastered docking systems.
As the new ISRO chief, Narayanan is expected to steer India's ambitious space exploration projects, building on a legacy of groundbreaking achievements. His leadership is poised to elevate India's stature in global space research and technology.
