Gaza Faces Unprecedented Food Shortage, WFP out of Food Stocks

Gaza is experiencing an unprecedented food crisis as the World Food Programme (WFP) has exhausted its food reserves due to Israel's nearly eight-week blockade. This blockade has halted the entry of essential supplies, including food, fuel, and medicine, severely impacting the humanitarian situation in the region.

The WFP's final distribution of food supplies has been completed, and charity kitchens across Gaza, which support approximately 80% of the population, are expected to run out of food within days. These kitchens have been providing around 644,000 hot meals daily, but with the depletion of supplies, many are now serving basic meals like pasta or rice due to ingredient shortages.

The blockade has led to the disappearance of essential food items from markets, including fruits, vegetables, milk, and meat. Remaining items are scarce and unaffordable for many residents, forcing families to rely on canned goods. Malnutrition rates have surged, with the United Nations reporting a significant increase in cases of acute malnutrition among children.

World Central Kitchen, an independent charity, is operating Gaza's sole functioning bakery, producing 87,000 pita loaves daily. However, the organization is facing challenges due to a lack of proteins and is resorting to using wooden pallets for fuel.

The United Nations has indicated that 116,000 tonnes of food aid are ready to be transported into Gaza, sufficient to sustain 1 million people for four months. However, these supplies are currently stuck outside Gaza, awaiting clearance from Israeli authorities.

The ongoing blockade and the depletion of food supplies have created a dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, with residents facing severe shortages and escalating malnutrition. International organizations and governments continue to call for the resumption of aid deliveries to alleviate the suffering of the population.
