Delhi's historic havelis, once the epicenters of Mughal-era culture, are experiencing a renaissance as music and cultural events breathe new life into these architectural gems. Initiatives like Music In The Haveli and Jahaanuma Mehfil are transforming these spaces into vibrant cultural hubs, blending heritage with contemporary artistry.
Music In The Haveli, founded by musician Sharad Joshi and policy expert Shruti Sinha, aims to reanimate havelis by hosting performances that fuse local, global, and experimental music. The Kathika Cultural Centre in Sita Ram Bazar's Imli Mohalla serves as a prime example, where electronic-ambient artist Goya performed in a restored haveli, creating an immersive experience that resonated with both the acoustics and aesthetics of the space. Goya's tracks, such as Dilli and Mad Scientist, incorporated sounds from Delhi's bustling streets, adding a local flavor to the modern compositions.
Similarly, Jahaanuma Mehfil at the 170-year-old Qaiser Manzil in Kucha Chelan celebrated the rich cultural heritage of Shahjahanabad. Curated by Abu Sufiyan of Tales of City, the event featured ghazals and classical music, offering an intimate setting that honored the traditions of the past while embracing contemporary expressions.
These endeavors are part of a broader movement to preserve and revitalize Delhi's architectural heritage. The Delhi Master Plan 2041 proposes converting heritage properties into spaces for cultural activities, ensuring that the city's rich history continues to inspire future generations.
As these havelis echo with the sounds of music, they not only preserve the past but also pave the way for a dynamic cultural future in Delhi.
