The 33 Hindu deities of the Vedas, collectively known as Trayastrinshata ("three plus thirty"), represent core cosmic and social principles that shape existence in Hindu belief.
These deities are grouped into four categories:
1. Twelve Adityas - The Adityas are solar and social deities who symbolize various aspects of life, order, and governance. Notable figures include Indra (Śakra), the god of rain and war, Mitra, the god of contracts, Varuna, the god of the cosmic order, and Vishnu, associated with preservation and balance in the universe.
2. Eleven Rudras - These deities are manifestations of Rudra, a form of Shiva, representing natural forces and vital energies. The Rudras embody aspects of destruction and regeneration, including Rudra, Ishana, and Sambhu, who govern different elements of life and nature.
3. Eight Vasus - The Vasus are elemental gods symbolizing the core forces of nature. They include Agni (fire), Vayu (wind), Varuna (water), and Dyaus (sky), among others, each representing fundamental elements that shape existence.
4. Two Ashvins - The Ashvins, or Nasatyas, are twin gods of medicine, health, and healing.
Together, these 33 deities play an integral role in the Rigveda, symbolizing balance and harmony within the universe and human society.
