Nirjala Ekadashi, observed on June 6 and 7, 2025, is one of the most sacred Hindu fasts, dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Starting at 2:15 AM on June 6 and ending at 4:47 AM on June 7, the fast is typically observed on June 6 per Udaya Tithi, though some Vaishnav traditions follow it on June 7. Known as the toughest Ekadashi, it involves complete abstinence from food and water, symbolizing devotion and self discipline. Religious texts state that observing this fast yields the spiritual benefits of all Ekadashis combined. Devotees engage in prayers, recite scriptures like the Vishnu Sahasranama, and donate water or sherbet, especially meaningful in summer.
The fast’s origin traces to Bhima from the Mahabharata, advised by sage Veda Vyasa to undertake this rigorous vow. Devotees begin with a Brahma Muhurta bath, offer Panchamrit and Tulsi to Vishnu, and avoid tamasic foods, anger, or lies. The fast concludes on Dwadashi with light food.
