The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is planning a game-changing move for senior secondary students. A two-level system for Science and Maths in Classes 11 and 12 will soon allow students to choose the subject difficulty based on their career aspirations. This initiative is inspired by the model already in place for Class 10 Maths, where students can opt for 'basic' or 'standard' levels.
Under this new system, a student aiming for engineering or medicine can pick the advanced version of subjects like Physics or Maths, while those pursuing careers in arts, commerce, or other fields can opt for a simpler version. This flexibility is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020’s focus on stress-free and customized learning.
If implemented, schools will need to adjust their teaching strategies, teacher training, and exam formats. While change may be challenging, it aims to reduce academic pressure and enhance interest-based learning for India’s youth-making STEM subjects more accessible without compromising on quality.
