Mamata's march? Not during Office hours, Says HC!

A single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court, presided over by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, has ordered that processions linked to the TMC’s July 21 Martyrs’ Day rally must halt during peak office hours. The court’s interim order directs that processions are permitted until 8 AM, followed by a one-hour wind-down period. From 9 AM to 11 AM, all processions must be suspended on routes leading to the High Court and within a 5 km radius of central Kolkata office districts, resuming only after 11 AM.

The ruling came in response to a petition by the All India Lawyers’ Union, which argued previous assurances failed to prevent traffic snarls. The court acknowledged organizers anticipate over one million participants at the rally site near Esplanade. It also suggested that future rallies shift to larger venues like Brigade Parade Ground or stadiums to minimize disruption.

Police have been directed to ensure sufficient personnel are deployed for traffic management. The petition will be heard in full during court sessions scheduled for November.
