On the 50th anniversary of India’s Emergency (June 25, 1975 – March 21, 1977), Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a stern reminder: “No Indian will ever forget the manner in which the spirit of our Constitution was violated.” He emphasized that every citizen must salute those who courageously fought against that dark chapter of democracy.
In Parliament, the PM sharply criticized the Congress-led regime for placing “democracy under arrest” and attacking civil liberties, press freedom, and judicial independence . He stated that the Emergency era remains an "unforgettable period" and underscored the need for "eternal vigilance" to ensure such abuses never recur .
Modi appealed for public recognition and gratitude toward the Satyagrahis, activists, journalists, and political leaders who resisted authoritarian measures. He said their unwavering spirit helped restore democracy. "Salute every person who fought against Emergency", the prime minister urged, stressing that protecting constitutional values remains a collective responsibility.
