The 78th Cannes Film Festival, taking place from May 13 to 24, 2025, has officially banned nudity on the red carpet for the first time. Though previous editions never openly supported revealing attire, this year marks the first time the festival has clearly addressed the matter in its formal dress code.
The new rule states that nudity is strictly prohibited on the red carpet and in all festival zones, citing "decency" concerns. Additionally, overly voluminous outfits that hinder guest movement or make seating difficult will also be restricted.
Organizers emphasized that attendees violating the new dress code may be denied red carpet access. The move appears to be a response to the recent global trend of "nude illusion" and ultra-sheer fashion dominating celebrity appearances at high-profile events.
This year's Indian contingent includes Alia Bhatt, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sharmila Tagore, and Karan Johar, among others.
With the new guidelines in place, fashion enthusiasts are keen to see how celebrities reinterpret glamour while respecting the updated rules of one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world.
