Luxury fashion brand Balenciaga has partnered with Swiss company QWSTION, the creator of Bananatex®, to release eco-friendly sneakers made entirely from banana plant fibers.
The collaboration introduces a sustainable version of Balenciaga’s popular Triple S sneakers, now available in black and beige, blending high fashion with environmental consciousness.
Bananatex® is a durable, biodegradable fabric made from the fibers of Abacá banana plants grown in the Philippines.
These plants require no fertilizers, pesticides, or extra irrigation, making them an ideal crop for sustainable textile production.
They also help restore biodiversity and reforest areas damaged by unsustainable agriculture, such as palm plantations.
The fabric was developed over three years and has received numerous awards for innovation and sustainability.
It is certified by The Vegan Society, affirming its cruelty-free and plant-based origin.
This move is part of a broader trend in the fashion industry toward circular materials and ethical production.
QWSTION is also a co-founder of the FIBRAL Material Alliance, a network promoting underutilized plant-based fibers globally.
This partnership with Balenciaga signals a major step toward mainstream acceptance of eco-friendly fashion and showcases how luxury brands can lead the way in environmental responsibility without compromising style or quality.
