Tensions escalated across Marathwada on July 1, as hundreds of farmers staged protests against ongoing land surveys for the proposed Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth Expressway project. The demonstrators blocked roads and held rallies, voicing strong opposition to what they say is a threat to their farmland and livelihoods.
The expressway, pitched as a major infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and boosting pilgrimage tourism, has met with resistance from farming communities who fear forced land acquisition, inadequate compensation, and displacement without consultation. In districts like Beed, Latur, and Osmanabad, protests saw active participation from local farmer groups, panchayats, and activists.
"We are not against development", said one protesting farmer, "but this cannot come at the cost of our land, our survival."
Activists have called for a halt to the survey until proper dialogue is held with affected communities. The government, meanwhile, has yet to issue a detailed response to the growing unrest, even as tension continues to simmer in the region.
