India is witnessing a renewable revolution with floating solar panels (FPV) - solar farms that float on reservoirs, lakes, and even mine pits. Unlike traditional solar plants that occupy farmland, FPV uses unused water surfaces, solving land conflict issues while producing clean energy.
At Ramagundam in Telangana, NTPC’s 100 MW floating solar plant not only powers homes but also saves 2 billion litres of water annually, enough for 10,000 households. The panels reduce evaporation by up to 90%, keep water bodies cooler, and even check algae growth.
Experts highlight that FPV also boosts efficiency - water’s cooling effect increases energy output by 10%. In Rajasthan, a mine pond-based FPV now powers industries while saving millions of litres of water. Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh is exploring 3,000 MW potential across its reservoirs.
The promise goes beyond energy: FPV cuts carbon emissions, reuses industrial pits, and complements hydropower by balancing day-night electricity needs. However, challenges remain - higher costs, fishing community disruptions, lack of policy clarity, and technical gaps.
With strong policies and local innovation, floating solar could unlock 200 GW of clean energy in India - transforming still waters into powerhouses of sustainability.
