The Partition of 1947 tore millions of families apart, yet it also sparked unexpected tales of resilience and love. One such story is of Balraj Bahri and Bhag Guliani, two refugees who met at Delhi’s Kingsway Camp - a shelter for over 30,000 displaced people.
Balraj, just 19, fled from Malakwal (now in Pakistan), while Bhag, 16, arrived from Dera Ismail Khan with her mother and siblings. Strangers in a new city, both families struggled to rebuild their lives. Fate intervened when Balraj’s adoptive sister introduced him to Bhag at a social service camp. Their quiet courtship - filled with stolen glances and jasmine gajras - blossomed into love.
By 1953, Balraj secured a small shop in Khan Market with help from his employer. That modest store grew into Bahrisons Booksellers, today one of Delhi’s most iconic bookstores, attracting diplomats, prime ministers, and book lovers from across the world.
In 1955, Balraj and Bhag married, building not only a family but also a literary landmark. Decades later, their granddaughter, historian Aanchal Malhotra, immortalized their journey in her book In the Language of Remembering, reminding us that even amid displacement and despair, love can write the most powerful stories.
