India's bold sports push: Khelo Bharat Niti aims for global top 5

The Union Cabinet has approved Khelo Bharat Niti 2025, superseding the 2001 National Sports Policy, with an ambitious goal of making India a top-five sporting nation by 2047. The policy aims to strengthen India's bid for hosting the 2036 Olympics through world-class coaching systems and athlete support.

Developed through extensive consultations with ministries, states, and sports federations, the policy emphasizes private sector participation through PPPs and CSR funding. It seeks to integrate sports with tourism and economic development while promoting league culture across disciplines.

Key focus areas include grassroots development, enhanced infrastructure, inclusivity for under-represented groups including women and LGBTQ+ communities, and aligning with the National Education Policy to make sports integral to school curriculum.
