Authorities in Bolivia have deported 20 members of the self-proclaimed “United States of Kailasa,” a fictional nation founded by fugitive godman Nithyananda. The group was accused of "land trafficking" after negotiating a fraudulent 1,000-year lease with Indigenous communities in the Amazon. Initially, the Baure community agreed to a 25-year deal for nearly $200,000 annually, but Kailasa members later altered the contract to include airspace rights and resource extraction.
Bolivian officials declared the agreements void, citing that Bolivia does not recognize Kailasa as a legitimate nation. The members, hailing from India, the U.S., Sweden, and China, were deported. This is not the first time Kailasa has duped officials previously, it signed fake “cultural partnerships” with over 30 American cities. Meanwhile, Nithyananda remains a fugitive, wanted in India for kidnapping and financial fraud. His whereabouts remain unknown.
