A horrifying railway accident unfolded on the evening of January 22, 2025, in Maharashtra's Jalgaon district, claiming 13 lives and injuring 10 others. The tragedy occurred after panic spread among passengers aboard the Lucknow-Mumbai Pushpak Express due to rumors of a fire in one of its coaches.
Around 5 p.m., someone pulled the emergency chain, halting the train between Maheji and Pardhade stations, approximately 400 km from Mumbai. Fearing a fire, several passengers leapt out of the moving train onto the tracks. In a tragic turn of events, they were struck by the Karnataka Express, which was speeding on the adjacent track.
The dead include nine men and four women, while three of the injured remain in critical condition. Dr. Vijay Gaikwad, medical superintendent at Jalgaon Government Medical College and Hospital, confirmed the death toll. Injured passengers are being treated at local hospitals in Pachora.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar stated that two passengers, Udhal Kumar and Vijay Kumar, were responsible for initiating the panic after hearing a pantry worker shout about a fire. The Maharashtra government has promised ₹5 lakh compensation for each victim's family and assured free medical treatment for the injured.
Railway services have since resumed. Authorities are investigating the circumstances, emphasizing the devastating consequences of rumors in emergencies.
