A recent study from the University of Colorado School of Medicine suggests that the "4:3" intermittent fasting (IMF) regimen may be more effective for weight loss than daily calorie restriction (DCR). The 4:3 method involves alternating between four days of normal eating and three non-consecutive days of reduced calorie intake each week.
The study observed 165 adults with overweight or obesity over a 12-month period. Participants following the 4:3 IMF regimen experienced an average weight loss of 7.6% of their body weight, compared to a 5% loss in the DCR group. Additionally, 58% of individuals in the IMF group lost at least 5% of their body weight, whereas only 47% in the DCR group achieved similar results.
Beyond weight loss, the IMF group exhibited improvements in cardio-metabolic markers, including reductions in systolic blood pressure and cholesterol levels. The study's lead author, Victoria Catenacci, noted that the simplicity of the 4:3 regimen might enhance adherence, as it eliminates the need for daily calorie counting.
While these findings are promising, health experts recommend consulting with healthcare professionals before making significant dietary changes, as individual needs and health conditions vary.
