The event, held on March 10, featured singer Aloshi Adams performing songs like "Pushpane Ariyamo" and "Nuru Pookkale," with CPI(M) and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) symbols reportedly displayed on an LED screen during the performance.
The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), responsible for managing the temple, has initiated a vigilance probe into the incident. TDB President P S Prasanth stated that an explanation has been sought from the temple advisory committee, emphasizing that the High Court has prohibited the display of political symbols within temple premises. Singer Aloshi Adams explained that the songs were performed in response to audience requests, a common practice in his performances.
The incident has drawn criticism from various political figures. Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan accused the CPI(M) of attempting to politicize temple events, questioning the appropriateness of singing about political figures during religious festivals. Kollam MP N K Premachandran alleged that the CPI(M) is trying to establish party dominance in areas like Kadakkal, similar to its influence in Kannur. BJP leader V Muraleedharan condemned the event as turning a temple festival into political propaganda, questioning whether similar actions would occur in other religious institutions.
In response, the Kerala High Court has directed the TDB to file an affidavit detailing actions taken against the temple advisory committee. The court criticized the inclusion of political songs and symbols in temple festivals, emphasizing that funds collected from devotees should be used appropriately and not for extravagant expenditures.
The TDB has assured that a thorough investigation is underway, with potential actions pending the findings. The temple advisory committee has been issued a show-cause notice, and the TDB's vigilance wing is conducting an inquiry into the events leading to the performance.
