Bohag Bihu, also known as Rongali Bihu or Xaat Bihu, is Assam's most cherished festival, symbolizing the Assamese New Year, the arrival of spring, and the beginning of the harvest season. Celebrated with music, dance, and community feasts, this vibrant festival reflects joy, renewal, and cultural pride. The seven-day celebration starts on April 14 this year and runs through April 20, with each day honoring unique traditions from Goru Bihu (cattle worship) to Manuh Bihu (self-purification and blessings).
“Rong” in Assamese means happiness, which beautifully captures the essence of Bihu marked by traditional Bihu songs (Bihugeets), the energetic Bihu dance, and the delicious feast of pithas and laru. Families come together, elders bless the young, and love fills the air as people don traditional attire and exchange greetings.
This festival is not just a cultural ritual it's a soul-stirring celebration of life, unity, and nature's bounty.
