On April 25, 2025, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced Russia's readiness for peace talks with Ukraine “without preconditions,” following President Vladimir Putin's meeting with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow. Putin reiterated Moscow's openness to negotiations, a stance he has previously emphasized. U.S. President Donald Trump, initially optimistic, claimed a deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war was “close.” However, Trump's tone shifted on Truth Social, expressing skepticism about Putin's intentions after recent Russian missile strikes on Ukrainian civilian areas.
Hinting at tougher measures like banking sanctions, Trump suggested Putin might be stalling. The talks, part of ongoing U.S.-Russia dialogues, highlight tensions as Ukraine insists on a full ceasefire before territorial discussions. With thousands dying weekly, the prospect of peace remains uncertain amidst diplomatic maneuvering.
