A University of Sydney study reveals a strong connection between chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia and migraines and poor dental health in New Zealand women. The research, involving 160 women, found that those with poor oral health were 49% more likely to suffer migraines and 60% more likely to experience moderate to severe physical pain. Dr. Niyati Arora, a Delhi-based prosthodontist, attributes this to hormonal fluctuations, lower pain thresholds, and psychosocial factors in women. Genomic analysis identified specific oral microbiome microbes linked to chronic pain.
Experts like Dr. Sakshi Hinduja emphasize that fatigue, depression, and hormonal shifts exacerbate oral health issues. Dr. Sindhu U Muktamath recommends professional dental care, softer toothbrushes, and medicinal rinses for treatment. Consistent oral hygiene and dentist consultations are vital for managing symptoms and improving long-term oral health.
