The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a sacred pilgrimage for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of the Bon religion, is set to resume on June 30, 2025, after being suspended for five years due to COVID-19 and border tensions. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced the restart, with the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) managing logistics such as food, accommodation, and travel. The MEA and state governments will oversee coordination and security.
The pilgrimage begins in Delhi, with pilgrims undergoing medical screening before starting the journey. The route passes through Tanakpur, Dharchula, Gunji, and Nabhidang, where yatris spend several days acclimatizing to the high altitude before crossing into Tibet via the Lipulekh Pass. The first group will enter China on July 10, and the last group is scheduled to return by August 22.
The entire journey lasts about 22 days and is divided into five batches of 50 pilgrims each. The return route includes stops at Bundi, Chaukori, and Almora before reaching Delhi.
Pilgrims are advised to pack essential items such as thermal clothing, trekking boots, warm socks, sunscreen, lip balm, basic medication, a first-aid kit, battery packs, and torches to ensure a safe and comfortable trek at altitudes reaching 15,000 feet.
