From ₹30 a Day to Bihar’s First Transgender Sub-Inspector, meet Madhu Kashyap!

Born as a boy, Madhu's journey is nothing less than a tale of strength, identity, and transformation.

Madhu’s feminine traits gradually became evident, leading her family to disown her. Forced to fend for herself, she began earning just ₹30 a day as a newspaper vendor. Despite these hardships, she pursued education, earning a political science degree in Baunsi, Bihar, in 2018.

At just ₹30 a day, Madhu began selling newspapers to make ends meet, all while pursuing a degree in political science in 2018. But Baunsi, a small and restrictive locality, felt too small for her big dreams. In 2021, she took a leap of faith and moved to Patna, armed with determination and the hope of creating a better future.

Determined to change her circumstances, Madhu moved to Patna in 2021, enrolling in an ITI diploma program in electrical work while grappling with financial struggles and societal stigma. Her resolve bore fruit when, on July 10, 2024, she became one of three transgender individuals to qualify as a sub-inspector through the Bihar Police Subordinate Selection Commission (BPSSC). This achievement, historic for Bihar’s transgender community, marks a turning point for inclusivity in law enforcement.

Life in Patna was a series of uphill battles. With limited resources and a society that didn’t understand her, Madhu enrolled in an ITI diploma program in electrical work. Each day brought new challenges, but she persevered, attending free coaching classes and relying on the kindness of strangers for financial support.

Then came the day that changed everything. On July 10, 2024, Madhu passed the Bihar Police Subordinate Selection Commission (BPSSC) exams, becoming one of the state’s first transgender sub-inspectors. From ₹30 a day to a ₹40,000 salary and a police uniform, her journey is an affirmation to courage and grit.
