Sreeja Akula etched her name in history at the WTT Contender tournament in Muscat, Oman, by becoming the first Indian paddler to win a WTT Contender Singles title. Her exceptional performance in the final saw her overcome a tough start against Ding Yijie of China, eventually sealing a commanding 4-1 victory with scores of 10-12, 11-9, 11-6, 11-8, and 11-6. Akula's resilience and skill shone as she bounced back from losing the first game to dominate the rest of the match.
Akula’s remarkable campaign didn’t stop with the singles title. She teamed up with Archana Kamath in the women’s doubles event, where the pair secured gold with a dominant 3-0 win over fellow Indians Diya Chitale and Yashaswini Ghorpade. Their scores of 11-9, 11-6, and 12-10 highlighted their synergy and control on the court.
The men’s doubles event also brought success for India, as Harmeet Desai and Manav Thakkar claimed the gold by defeating Nigeria’s Azeez Solanke and Olajide Omotayo in straight sets (11-8, 11-9, 11-8).
India’s impressive performance at the event resulted in three gold medals and a silver, showcasing the country’s growing prominence in table tennis. Akula’s historic achievement serves as a powerful inspiration for aspiring athletes and underscores India’s rising stature in international sports.
