Hollywood’s latest sensation has four legs and a charming demeanor—meet Bing, the Great Dane starring alongside Naomi Watts and Bill Murray in The Friend. Bing, a 7-year-old canine with floppy ears and an impressive 150-pound frame, is making headlines as Watts’ most cooperative co-star. Trained by Bev Klingensmith from Iowa, Bing’s journey from a beloved show dog to a movie star began unexpectedly when Klingensmith received a casting email in 2019, initially thought to be a scam. To her surprise, it was genuine, leading Bing to New York City to film the movie.
On set, Bing’s discipline and training shone through. His experience in obedience competitions made him calm amid the bustling film environment. Watts, who trained with Bing before filming, praised his professionalism, noting how he remained alert and sensitive to his surroundings, making him an ideal screen partner. Filming in New York City was no easy feat, but Bing’s composure and focus remained steadfast despite the city’s chaos.
Based on Sigrid Nunez’s bestselling novel, The Friend tells the story of Iris (Naomi Watts), a writer who inherits a Great Dane after her friend’s (Bill Murray) passing. The film beautifully explores themes of loss, healing, and human-canine bonds.
Bing also made a grand appearance at the movie’s premiere, where Watts donned a white dress with black spots, mirroring Bing’s coat. Bing, with his calm and charming presence, continues to win hearts both on and off the screen.
