The truth about SPF numbers your dermatologist wants you to know!

Everyone knows sunscreen matters, but the idea that “higher SPF always means better protection” isn’t exactly true. Experts say that while sunscreens with a higher SPF number do offer slightly more protection against UV rays, the difference between SPF 30, SPF 50, or SPF 60 isn’t huge when it comes to real-world use.
SPF numbers refer to how much longer the sunscreen can theoretically delay sunburn compared to unprotected skin. For example, SPF 30 blocks most UVB rays, and SPF 50 blocks only a bit more. But no sunscreen blocks 100% of harmful UV rays, and you can’t stay in the sun indefinitely just because the SPF number is high.
The real secret to effective sun protection isn’t chasing triple-digit SPF numbers - it’s about applying sunscreen generously, reapplying every 2–3 hours, and combining it with shade, hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses. Applying correctly and consistently often matters more for your skin than choosing the highest SPF available.
Sun protection should be part of your daily routine, not just when you’re heading out for a long beach day.
