Despite the famous “cats vs dogs” stereotype, some dog breeds are actually known for getting along really well with cats. Their calm nature, low aggression, and friendly personalities make them ideal for homes with multiple pets.
One of the most popular cat-friendly breeds is the Golden Retriever, known for being patient, gentle, and extremely social. Labrador Retrievers are also considered great companions because of their playful but non-aggressive behaviour.
Smaller breeds like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel often adapt well to cats because of their affectionate and calm personality. Meanwhile, intelligent dogs like Poodles quickly learn boundaries and adjust easily to living with feline companions.
Even breeds that may look intimidating, like Boxers, can become surprisingly protective and playful around cats when properly trained and socialised. Relaxed breeds like Basset Hounds are also favourites because their laid-back attitude feels less threatening to cats.
Experts say successful dog-cat relationships depend not only on breed but also on early introductions, supervision, training, and personality compatibility. Many pet owners online now share videos of dogs and cats cuddling, playing, and behaving more like siblings than rivals.
The growing popularity of multi-pet homes is also changing how people think about the old “natural enemies” stereotype between cats and dogs.
