A CBI Special Court in Mohali, on July 23, 2025, sentenced former Superintendent of Police Paramjit Singh (67/68) to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment and a ₹50,000 fine. He was found guilty in a 1993 fake encounter that resulted in the death of two Punjab Police constables - Surmukh and Sukhwinder Singh - who were falsely labeled "unidentified militants" and killed in Amritsar.
The case was initially investigated by the CBI in December 1995 and officially charged in 1997 after the Supreme Court directed a re-probe. The investigation revealed the two officers had been abducted from their homes, custodial-killed, and later presented as militants, with evidence fabricated to support the false narrative.
Three other accused - Inspector Dharam Singh, ASIs Kashmir Singh and Darbara Singh - were acquitted for lack of evidence, while one sub-inspector passed away during the trial.
The court emphasized the years-long trauma endured by the victims’ families and recommended a compensation order via Mohali’s legal service authority.
