India is home to over 380 million young people aged 10 to 24, the largest youth population globally. This "demographic dividend" is seen as India’s biggest strength, promising economic prosperity and innovation. But behind this number lies a silent crisis-one that could endanger the nation’s future.
An alarming rise in depression, anxiety, and suicide points to a growing mental health emergency among Indian youth. According to data, one person dies by suicide every hour in India. While education and job creation are often seen as solutions for youth empowerment, mental well-being is rarely prioritized.
If ignored, this invisible burden could derail the very progress India seeks through its young population. It is no longer enough to celebrate youth as future leaders-we must also safeguard their mental health today.
Urgent steps such as increased awareness, school-level counseling, and accessible therapy services are vital. India cannot afford to let its demographic advantage turn into a demographic disaster.
