Can this handheld device replace costly brain scans?

Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) are one of India’s biggest health challenges, often caused by road accidents, falls, or violence. Every year, nearly 2 million people suffer head injuries, with many going undiagnosed due to lack of quick and affordable tools.

Enter CEREBO, a portable, non-invasive brain injury diagnostic device developed by ICMR, AIIMS Bhopal, NIMHANS Bengaluru, and Bioscan Research. Unlike CT or MRI scans, CEREBO delivers results within a minute, is radiation-free, and safe for infants and pregnant women. Even paramedics and unskilled workers can use it effectively.

Using advanced near-infrared spectroscopy and machine learning, the device detects bleeding and swelling in the brain. Designed for ambulances, trauma centres, rural clinics, and disaster zones, CEREBO aims to save lives by ensuring faster diagnosis and timely treatment.

Experts believe CEREBO could transform emergency care, cut imaging costs, and help doctors decide faster whether a patient needs further neurological tests. With global adoption on the horizon, this small device could become a big game-changer in brain healthcare.
