On September 9, 2025, Parliament convenes to elect India’s next Vice President following Jagdeep Dhankhar’s abrupt resignation on July 21, citing health reasons. The contest pits NDA’s Maharashtra Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan against the INDIA bloc’s nominee, retired Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy. Voting runs from 10 AM to 5 PM in Parliament House, with counting starting at 6 PM and results expected by evening.
The NDA holds a clear numerical advantage, meaning Radhakrishnan is the frontrunner. However, the INDIA bloc is keen to demonstrate solidarity, hosting mock-poll sessions to minimize ballot errors and instruct MPs on the intricate single transferable vote system. Meanwhile, parties like BJD and BRS have opted to abstain their abstention shifts the effective majority, slightly raising suspense around the final tally.
As ballots cast and alliances test their cohesion, today’s vote serves not just as constitutional duty but as a measure of political discipline on both sides.
