The death toll from monsoon-triggered disasters in Himachal Pradesh has risen to 85, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) reported on Thursday, July 10. Of these, 54 fatalities resulted directly from rain‑related incidents—such as landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts - while 31 deaths were due to road accidents during treacherous weather.
Since June 20, the state has endured 23 flash floods, 16 landslides, and 19 cloudbursts, severely affecting key hill districts like Mandi, Kangra, Kullu, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, and Una. These events damaged roads, bridges, water-supply systems, and power infrastructure - some tallying losses up to ₹692 crore in Mandi alone.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with NDRF, SDRF, and local forces deployed. The SDMA has issued yellow alerts, urging residents to avoid vulnerable slopes, riverbanks, and construction zones while monsoon continues. Authorities stress the urgent need for improved disaster preparedness amid increasingly extreme weather in the Himalayan region.
