Boat shoes, originally crafted in the 1930s by Paul Sperry for sailors, are experiencing a major fashion resurrection. Once a symbol of preppy coastal leisure, these moccasin-style shoes have evolved into high-fashion favorites, embraced by designers like Miu Miu, Loewe, Jacquemus, and Bottega Veneta.
Their revival began with runway debuts in Spring/Summer 2024—most notably at Miu Miu—and continued through collaborations between heritage brands and trendy fashion houses. For example, Sperry’s Aritzia collaboration and Todd Snyder’s projects have boosted visibility and appeal to younger consumers. According to Circana data, the women’s boat shoe segment has expanded sevenfold in early 2025 compared to men’s, contributing to an overall 24 % year-over-year sales jump, the first growth in over a decade.
Gen Z’s shifting tastes also play a key role. Fed up with flashy sneakers, many are gravitating toward timeless, minimalist pieces offering comfort and sustainability. Boat shoes align with this ethos through durable materials, classic construction, and easy styling potential.
Meanwhile, the broader “fisherman aesthetic” or “anglercore” trend—featuring Breton stripes, utility-inspired garments, and lightly nautical accessories—has brought boat shoes firmly into fashion-conscious wardrobes even in landlocked cities.
Today, boat shoes bridge casual style and quiet luxury: think suede or distressed leather versions that capably complement tailored trousers, breezy dresses, or minimalist ensembles.
