California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on June 9, 2025, that the state will sue the Trump administration over the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles to curb anti-ICE protests. Newsom, alongside Democrats like Kamala Harris, condemned the move as unlawful and inflammatory, accusing President Donald Trump of manufacturing a crisis to justify federal overreach. Posting on X, Newsom warned that Trump’s order could allow similar actions in any state, calling it a breach of state sovereignty. The protests, sparked by ICE raids arresting 44 individuals on June 6, escalated with clashes, tear gas, and rubber bullets as demonstrators blocked freeways.
Trump criticized Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on Truth Social, labeling them ineffective and calling protesters “troublemakers and insurrectionists.” Newsom urged peaceful protests, vowing to hold violent actors accountable while challenging Trump’s unprecedented federalization of the National Guard, a rare move last seen in 1992.
