Traditionally, GDM screening is conducted between the 24th and 28th weeks of pregnancy. However, recent studies suggest that initiating screening before 14 weeks can lead to improved pregnancy outcomes.
GDM, characterized by elevated blood glucose levels during pregnancy, poses risks such as high blood pressure, increased likelihood of cesarean sections, and long-term health issues like type 2 diabetes for the mother. For the child, it can lead to complications including high birth weight and future metabolic disorders.
Early detection allows for timely interventions, including dietary modifications, physical activity, and, if necessary, medication to manage blood sugar levels. This proactive approach not only mitigates immediate pregnancy-related risks but also reduces the likelihood of chronic health conditions post-pregnancy.
In India, where the prevalence of GDM is rising, integrating early screening protocols into routine prenatal care is vital. Healthcare providers are encouraged to assess risk factors such as family history of diabetes, obesity, and previous instances of GDM to identify candidates for early testing.
By prioritizing early screening and intervention, the healthcare system can better support maternal and child health, reducing the burden of gestational diabetes and its associated complications.
