A 5.1‑magnitude earthquake struck northern Iran on Friday, near Semnan province, at approximately 10 km beneath the surface, according to the US Geological Survey. The tremor occurred around 37 km southwest of Semnan city and was felt in Tehran and nearby regions. State media initially reported the quake’s magnitude as 5.5, affecting the area around Sorkheh, but noted that no casualties or significant damage occurred.
Semnan province is home to strategic installations such as the Semnan Missile Complex and Space Centre, located within roughly 37 km of the quake's epicenter. The region is seismically active, with this quake marking one of many moderate tremors in recent years.
Local officials continue to monitor the situation, but relief agencies report only minimal concern. The event underscores the fragility of Iran's geologically and politically charged environment.
