Satellite-internet pioneer Starlink, owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, is gearing up to offer services in India, with Maharashtra on track to be the first state to go live. The telecom regulator granted crucial approvals earlier this year, making Starlink the third satellite internet provider authorised to operate in the country. The company has also signed agreements with major Indian carriers Bharti Airtel and Jio Platforms to distribute and partner in its rollout.
Maharashtra’s state government signed a memorandum to host Starlink’s commercial deployment, with a focus on reaching remote and underserved regions. The service is expected to offer speeds in the 50 Mbps to 250 Mbps range, with hardware and monthly subscription costs estimated at around ₹33,000 and ₹3,000–4,200 respectively.
Starlink’s arrival could reshape India’s broadband landscape - especially in rural areas - though affordability and regulatory compliance remain key concerns. With gateway stations and spectrum still being finalised, a full commercial launch is anticipated by end-2025 or early 2026.
