This year’s Durga Puja in Kolkata has taken a poignant turn, spotlighting the struggles and resilience of acid attack survivors. The Dakshindari Youth Club’s pandal, themed “Dahan” (meaning “burning”), presents a stark portrayal of the trauma faced by these survivors. Visitors navigate through unfinished structures draped in jute sacks, symbolizing the unfinished lives of acid attack victims. The experience culminates in a live performance where survivors declare, “Ami Shei Meye” (“I am that girl”), challenging societal perceptions and advocating for justice.
This initiative aligns with alarming statistics: West Bengal records the highest number of acid attack cases in India, with over 200 incidents annually, and a staggering 95% of perpetrators remain unpunished. By integrating social issues into the festive celebrations, the puja committees aim to foster a deeper understanding and empathy among the public, urging collective action towards justice and support for survivors.
