Kathmandu, July 12, 2025 – Monsoon floods washed away the Miteri Bridge over the Lehende (Bhotekoshi) River on July 8, cutting off the Rasuwagadhi border crossing and disrupting the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage route. The bridge served as a crucial checkpoint for both Nepali and foreign pilgrims heading to Tibet’s sacred Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar.
TAAN (Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal) General Secretary Sonam Gyaljen Sherpa warned that the closure could strand thousands of travelers and urged both Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and China to engage diplomatically. He suggested opening alternative border routes such as Tatopani, Korola, and Hilsa, and streamlining visa processes in Kathmandu to prevent delays.
Prior to the bridge collapse, at least nine people died and 19 remain missing, with dozens of vehicles - especially India-bound electric vehicles—swept away. Nepal expects around 25,000 Indian pilgrims during this season, many of whom rely on the Rasuwagadhi-Kerung crossing for overland access.
TAAN’s appeal emphasizes the need for rapid diplomatic solutions to reroute pilgrims, avert overcrowding, and ensure a smooth yatra amid logistical challenges in this sacred season.
