In a groundbreaking move to tackle its chronic air pollution, Delhi is set to attempt artificial rain for the first time ever between July 4 and 11. The project, spearheaded by IIT Kanpur, will use cloud seeding technology - a method of triggering rain by spraying chemicals like silver iodide into moisture-laden clouds.
A modified aircraft will carry out the mission, with its flight plan already submitted to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The operation hinges on the presence of suitable clouds during the scheduled window. If successful, this experimental rainfall could help clear the smog and dust that suffocates Delhi, especially during peak pollution months.
Cloud seeding has been used globally in places like China and the UAE, but this will be a first for the capital city. Authorities are calling it a "test run" with the potential to transform Delhi’s air quality strategy.
Is man-made rain Delhi’s next big fix - or a stormy gamble? We’ll know soon.
