India is quickly moving forward in the field of quantum computing, a technology that could revolutionize everything from medicine to national security. The government has launched a major program called the National Quantum Mission, with a budget of ₹6,000 crore to support research, development, and innovation in this area until 2031.
Several top institutes like IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IISc Bengaluru have been chosen to lead research in different areas such as quantum computing, communication, and sensors. Recently, Indian scientists developed a six-qubit quantum processor a significant step in building the country’s own quantum machines. Even Indian startups are joining the movement. One such company has launched a 25-qubit quantum system, designed and built completely in India.
Efforts are also being made in secure communication using quantum technology. Indian scientists have successfully tested systems that can send information safely over long distances, which could be useful for defence and banking.
These developments show that India is not just catching up but is actively shaping the future of quantum technology through a strong mix of government support, academic research, and startup innovation.
