After her children grew up, Suman Sukhija found herself with free time — and the desire to do something meaningful. She discovered mushroom cultivation online and, despite having no scientific background, enrolled in a short training programme. Choosing “Keeda Jadi” (Cordyceps militaris), known for its health benefits, she converted a modest 10 × 10-foot room in her Delhi home into a makeshift lab. The initial investment, she admits, was steep — but her resolve was stronger.
Her first attempts failed; contamination and inexperience ruined the initial crop. But Suman persisted, mastering sterilisation and lab protocols. Gradually, she succeeded: her first tiny harvest of 200–250 grams felt like gold. With continued learning and discipline she refined the process.
Today, under the brand Orange Herb, Suman produces 16–20 kg of Cordyceps per cycle. Her annual revenue crosses ₹40 lakh. She also expanded into saffron and microgreens cultivation. Beyond her own venture, she runs training programmes: over 1,000 people — many women — have learned indoor mushroom farming under her mentorship. Her journey exemplifies how small spaces, steady effort and discipline can transform a quiet home into a thriving wellness enterprise — and turn a homemaker into a mentor and leader.
